What is Library Instruction?

Students at Salisbury University should be aware of the wide variety of print and electronic information resources available to them and should be able to conduct effective library research by learning how to identify, access, retrieve and evaluate appropriate information for their needs (information literacy).

To achieve this,
Blackwell librarians are readily available to teach library instruction sessions tailored toward a curricular or research need.

Library instruction at Salisbury University may take any number of forms:
        an
individual class session (one or more 50 or 75 minute class periods)
an individual class session combined with one of the following:

resource-specific orientation
             class assignment
             library-related assignment or activity
        collaborative course teaching
        a small group session
        an individual student session

Library instruction is available on a first-come, first-served basis to all Salisbury University classes at the request of the course instructor (please allow a two-week lead time).

Sessions may be scheduled in several library spaces or may be conducted in locations outside the library, such as regular course classroom or other campus buildings.

Course instructors are encouraged to attend library class sessions with their students.  Student learning and motivation are enhanced when their instructor is present during a library class session.

Library Instruction & Information Literacy

What is the connection?

The Blackwell Library instruction program has two major goals:
To support classroom instruction by teaching students to find and use information for
    ● course assignments
To foster lifelong learning in students by teaching information literacy skills and
    ● research techniques

The Connection is YOU!

Library instruction is most effective when classroom faculty and faculty librarians work together.  Contact the Library Instruction Coordinator or your librarian liaison to schedule your class today!
