Fines and Bill Payment

General Collection Books:
25 cents per day per item to a maximum of $7.50. After 30 days, the item will be presumed lost.

Course Reserves/DVDs/Equipment (headphones, charging kits, etc.):
Hourly:  $1 per hour per item up to a maximum of $10.
Daily:  One-day loans: $10 per day per item up to a maximum of $100.  Three-day and Seven-day loans:  $2 per day per item up to a maximum of $20.

Laptops:  
Daily Overdue Fines:  $10 per day for laptop, and $10 per day for laptop charger, up to a maximum of $100 each.
Lost or Damaged:  $1100 replacement fee for laptop, $50 replacement fee for laptop charger.

Please Note:

  • Patrons who accrue $20 or more in overdue laptop or equipment fines may not check out a laptop or piece of equipment until all fines are fully paid.

iPads:
Daily Overdue Fines: $10 per day for iPad, and $10 per day for iPad charger, up to a maximum of $50 each. After 5 days, the iPad and charger will be presumed lost.
Lost or Damaged: $800 replacement fee for iPad, $50 replacement fee for charging cord and/or power adapter.

Fitbits:
Daily Overdue Fines:
$10 per day, up to a maximum of $50.  After 5 days, the Fitbit will be presumed lost.
Lost or damaged:  Replacement fees of $100 for Fitbit Flex, $150 for Fitbit Charge, and $250 for Fitbit Surge.

Please note:

  • Patrons may have only one iPad or Fitbit charged to their account at one time.
  • All SU patrons (including students, faculty, and staff) are subject to fines for overdue/lost iPads, iPad chargers, and Fitbits
  • Patrons who accrue overdue fines for iPads or Fitbits must pay them in full before checking out another iPad or Fitbit.

Lost Books:
General Collection books - $75 replacement cost + $15 processing fee
Leisure, Juvenile, and Curriculum Resource Center books - $35 replacement cost + $15 processing fee.

Note:  Replacement book(s) are not accepted in lieu of replacement cost(s).
Lost book payment reimbursements will only be made to patrons who have had active accounts within the previous five years and for materials returned within one year of being declared lost.

Overdue Recalls:  $1 per item per day up to a maximum of $30. After 30 days, the item will be presumed lost.

ILL Books:  Overdue fees or material replacement costs may be charged by the lending library. The patron's ILL account and SU Libraries account may be blocked until fees/costs are paid.

Loans from other University System of Maryland Libraries:  Fines are determined by the lending library and must be paid directly to them.

Faculty and staff are responsible for charges related to Lost Materials, Overdue Recalls (including those owned by SU), ILL Books, and Loans from other USMAI Libraries.

The accounts of Special Borrowers who accrue at least $5 in overdue fines will be blocked, and patrons will not be permitted to check out additional items until the fines are fully paid.

Patrons receive circulation notices via e-mail: Circulation notices are automatically delivered via e-mail to all library patrons. Library patrons are responsible for being aware of library policies and procedures, monitoring when items they borrow are due back to the library, and reading e-mail messages on a regular basis. Notices are delivered as a courtesy only. Failure to receive an email does not release patron from his or her responsibility to return items on time and pay all accrued fines.

Bill Payment:
Within 30 days of incurring a fine, payment may be paid in person at the Library Service Desk with cash, check (payable to Salisbury University), credit card ($5 minimum) or Gull Card. We are not able to accept online payments.  Payment also may be mailed in the form of a check or money order to the following address:

After 30 days, payment must be directed to the Cashier's Office.

Mobile Device Policies

The following policies apply to the circulation of mobile devices (including laptops, netbooks, and iPads/tablets), and should be read and thoroughly understood prior to checking out a device.

Eligible Borrowers:

  • Devices may be checked out only by SU patrons, including current students, faculty, & staff.
  • A current Gull Card must be presented each time a device is checked out.
  • The Library reserves the right to refuse service to anyone who abuses equipment or is repeatedly late in returning devices.

Availability & Time Limits:

  • Laptops, iPads, and Fitbits may not be reserved ahead of time and are checked out on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Laptops may be checked out for 24 hours and may be renewed 1 time.
  • iPads and Fitbits may be checked out for 2 weeks and may NOT be renewed.
  • Laptops may be taken out of the Guerrieri Academic Commons.  Please note:  laptops are programmed to connect to the SU-Secure wireless network on campus, but they will not connect to personal wireless networks off-campus.
  • iPads and Fitbits may be taken out of the Guerrieri Academic Commons.
  • When the Library Service Desk is closed, laptops may be returned to the Laptop Return Lockers across from the Cafe.

Non-Circulating Materials

The following materials do not circulate outside of the Guerrieri Academic Commons:

  • Accounting Reference Materials
  • Equipment (headphones, etc.)
  • Faculty Scholarship (Faculty Collection)
  • Maryland Collection Materials
  • Masters Degree Theses
  • Microforms
  • Journals/Magazines/Newspapers
  • Rare Books
  • Reference Materials
  • SU Archive Materials
  • Film Press Kits

Recalls

Occasionally, materials are recalled. From the date of the recall notice, borrowers have 14 days to return the material. If materials are not returned by the new recall date, special recall fines will apply (see Fines above).

Renewals

SU & Direct Borrowing Renewals:
Most SU & Direct Borrowing items may be renewed:

  • Through the 'My Account/Renew Items' link on the library web site
  • by phone - 410-543-6130
  • in person at the Library Service Desk

NOTE: SU does not have a renewal limit, but other USMAI libraries may have differing limits on the number of times an item can be renewed.

Interlibrary Loan Renewals:
Renewal requests should be made 5 days before the due date listed on the sticker on the cover of the ILL item. The lending library determines whether or not to renew the item. Requests should be made by logging in to the patron’s Interlibrary Loan account and clicking on “request renewal,” or by contacting the Interlibrary Loan Office at illoans@salisbury.edu  Please note: ILL items may not be renewed in 'My Account' through the library's catalog.

Returns

To avoid fines, patrons should return borrowed items by the due date indicated on the date due receipt or recall notice. Items may be returned to the book depository at the Library Service Desk or to the outside depository. For your convenience, return receipts are available.

An SU borrower must present their SU Gull Card when borrowing items. USMAI borrowers must present their respective school ID cards when borrowing items. Maryland Residents of Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset and Dorchester Counties may apply for a special borrower card at the Library Service Desk.
