The Spain: Summer Intensive Spanish Program has run every summer during five weeks for over a decade. Tentative Program dates for 2011 are May 31 - July 4, 2011.  The program is based at the Universidad de Málaga in Málaga, Spain, a beautiful and historic beach-lined city of 600,000 on the country’s famous Costa del Sol. The program combines intensive classroom study with excursions throughout Andalucia.  It is designed to provide students with an opportunity to totally immerse themselves into the Spanish language and culture.  Although the curriculum is rigorous, there is ample opportunity for students to explore the Mediterranean city and local beaches throughout the month-long program.

CLASS: All students earn four credits for Spanish 309: Summer Program in Spain. Classes, which consist only of SU Program students, are conducted by Universidad de Málaga faculty and the SU faculty Program Director.  Courses are held at the Universidad de Málaga’s Cursos para Extranjeros center, which is located in the picturesque beach-front neighborhood of El Palo, just outside of downtown Málaga. Classes meet each morning with a one-hour class on Spanish grammar review and composition, followed by another one-hour class on Spanish culture, history, and art.  In addition to the regular morning classes, students participate in a variety of activities outside of the classroom that are incorporated into the coursework.  Prerequisite:  Spanish 202.

EXCURSIONS: The Program features excursions to Granada, Córdoba and Sevilla. The SU faculty Program Director accompanies students on these trips, serving as guide and actually holding class in the likes of Granada’s Alhambra, Córdoba’s Mezquita, and Sevilla’s Catedral and Reales Alcázares, as well as other sites of interest, all of which the students study in slide presentations in class in Málaga prior to seeing them come to life on the excursions. Program participants also visit sites in Málaga, such as the Catedral and Alcazaba.  Students also have ample free time to explore Málaga and its surroundings–the caves of Nerja, the beaches of Torremolinos and Marbella, the mountain town of Mijas, the old plaza de toros of Ronda, even the Rock of Gibraltar–on their own.

HOUSING: Students  live and take meals in selected Spanish homes, most of which are situated within a 10-minute walk of the Mediterranean.

COST: Costs for 2011 are TBA.  The final cost will be determined in spring 2011.  The Program price includes all tuition, room and board in a Spanish home throughout the Program, multiple Program-organized excursions, international health insurance, bus passes in Spain, welcome and departure receptions in Spain, and significant support by the on-site SU faculty director.  Not included: international airfare, passport fees.

DEPOSIT AND PAYMENT INFORMATION:  An initial deposit of $250 is due at the time of application.  This deposit is part of the total advertised cost of the program.  Once a student is academically admitted by the faculty director, the initial non-refundable deposit is due to the Cashier’s Office.  The student will be automatically enrolled into the study abroad course.  The University Billing Office will then bill each registered student for the total cost of the study abroad program (less the deposit amount) through the regular university billing system.  Standard University deadlines for withdrawals do not apply to study abroad programs.  Once the published Application Deadline occurs, the accepted student is responsible for the entire amount of the study abroad program charge.

Admission to the program is competitive and program enrollment is limited to 15 participants.   Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full.

In addition to a completed application, students should submit the following directly to the Program Director:

-  A completed faculty recommendation form from a faculty member who knows the  student well.   Faculty Recommendation form available here. 

-  An unofficial transcript demonstrating an overall Grade Point Average GPA of 2.5.
