Students who participate in the 21st International Guitar-Symposium Iserlohn may earn university credit through the Hochschule für Musik Detmold (Germany) or Salisbury University (University of Maryland system, USA).

Any student who wishes to earn an American university credit is welcome to apply to the Salisbury University program.

The International Guitar Symposium is held in Iserlohn and Villigst, Germany and is one of the largest and most important classical guitar festivals in Europe. The performers and teachers are among the best in the world and the festival is famous for offering world-class classical guitar concerts and instruction in a welcoming environment. The course consists of the one-week intensive classical guitar festival, The 21st International Guitar Symposium in Germany, together with some additional preparation prior to the festival and follow-up written assignments immediately after the festival.

CLASS: Special Topics in Music MUSC 450 is a 2 credit course. Participation in all scheduled events at the International Guitar Symposium is strictly required. In addition to attending the eleven concerts throughout the week, each student will receive four individual classical guitar lessons as well as chamber music coaching and technique classes. Students will play in the Guitar Orchestra, attend lectures, have the opportunity to perform in the final public concert, as well as enjoy leisure time with guitar students from around the world. Prior to the program, students will select and prepare four pieces of repertoire which will be the focus of their lessons in Germany. Following the Symposium, students will be required to submit written assignments reviewing the lessons, concerts and experience of their time in Germany. Preparatory and concluding course activities can be done either independently or with the assistance of the student’s studio guitar teacher. Final written work will be submitted online. Students from around the world are invited to participate in this credit-bearing course.

HOUSING: The International Guitar Symposium is held in Haus Villigst, a newly renovated 12th century manor. Participants will stay in beautiful residence rooms, each with bathroom/shower, eat together in the dining hall (vegetarian or vegan meals will be provided if requested), and study in the teaching studios.

COST: Costs for the Classical Guitar Studies in Germany Summer Program are estimated to be $1300. A final cost will be determined in spring 2012. The price will include all SU tuition and fees, accommodation for seven nights, all meals (four meals a day), admission to all Symposium events including concerts, master classes, lectures and entry into the Exhibition Hall to see luthiers from around the world, music publishers and more, international health insurance, and support throughout the program by the faculty director.
