The
Perdue School of Business in collaboration with the
School for International Business at the Dongbei
University of Finance and Economics in Dalian, China
offers students a
chance to experience firsthand one of the world’s most
unique and fast changing societies. Students will visit
Dalian, a port city in northeastern China. With its wide
boulevards, beautiful green spaces, and beaches.
Dalian is one of the most dynamic cities in China. The
2009 Summer Program in China
will run for three weeks from late
May through late June.
CLASSES ECON 441 International Economics:
This course will
study economic concepts and theories for international
business, international trade and finance, commercial
policy, foreign investment and multinational firms.
Prerequisites: Econ 211, Econ 212 or instructor’s
permission BUAD 396 Business in
Study Abroad: Financial
Institutions and Markets in a World Economy: This course
examines the structure and functions of depository and
non-depository institutions, the money and capital
markets, and the role of government in the financial
markets. Emphasis will be on both US and international
banking environments with attention to foreign exchange
markets, exchange rate behavior, risk management and
international trade financing. Prerequisite: FINA 311
with grade of C or better or economics major with senior
status.
HOST INSTITUTION: Located in Dalian, a
beautiful coast city at the southern tip of Liandong
Peninsula, Dongbei (Northeast)
University
of Finance and
Economics (DUFE) is a
multidisciplinary university focusing on Economics and
Management together with Law and Liberal Arts. DUFE is
one of the top business universities in China. Graduates
of DUFE hold key positions in various Chinese
governmental, financial and banking institutions. The
university has over 10,000 students (graduate and
undergraduate). DUFE has established collaborative
relationships with over forty foreign universities.
EXCURSIONS: The program
includes
significant travel within China. Past excursions
have included, Shanghai - the largest economic entity in
China one of China's principle
international cities, and
Beijing – the capital city and the political, cultural,
and administrative center of China.
In Beijing students have visited
the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Summer Palace,
Temple of Heaven, and the Peking University.
HOUSING:
Students stay in the International
House on DUFE campus designed for foreign students and
faculty in Dalian. While in Beijing, students stay
at the International Student Activity Center with easy
access to city center. Both places are facilitated with
air conditioning, private full bath, TV, and more.
COST: Estimated costs for
the program are $3,700. The
final cost will be determined in spring 2009.
These costs
include tuition, all airfare, entry visa fee, lodging,
field trips, scheduled sight-seeing, and all meals
during the entire program.
DEPOSIT AND PAYMENT
INFORMATION:
An initial deposit of $1500
is due at the time of application. This deposit is part
of the total advertised cost of the program. Once a
student is academically admitted by the faculty
director, the initial non-refundable deposit is due to
the Cashier’s Office. The student will be automatically
enrolled into the study abroad course. The University
Billing Office will then bill each registered student
for the total cost of the study abroad program (less the
deposit amount) through the regular university billing
system. Standard University deadlines for withdrawals
do not apply to study abroad programs.
Once the published
Application Deadline occurs, the accepted student is
responsible for the entire amount of the study abroad
program charge.
APPLICATION INFORMATION:
Application
forms are available at the Center for International
Education or from the faculty director. Completed
application forms are currently being accepted by the
faculty director or by the Center for International
Education. Admission is competitive and enrollment is
limited to 30 participants.
Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the
program is full. Students will be selected based on
business discipline, GPA (a minimum of a 2.5 required),
written essay and 2 letters of recommendation. All
students must be in good conduct standing with the
university. The application deadline is
February 13, 2009.
