Alternative Financial Aid and Scholarships

addition to sources at Salisbury University, there are
other institutions, agencies, and organization which
offer financial aid.

- Links for Alternative Sources of
Financial Aid for Study Abroad

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
- this site offers information on scholarships offered
through the U.S. Department of State for up to $5,000
for undergraduate students who would like to study
abroad. Students must be receiving a Federal Pell
Grant. Other criteria for scholarship eligibility are
listed on the site.

NSEP Boren Programs - provides
opportunities for U.S. students to study abroad.
Students are able to get information about the
scholarship, eligibility, and apply online for the
scholarship.

UNESCO Laura W. Bush Fellowship -
The fellowship will
help fund a proposal designed by the applicant to
conduct brief work in a foreign country related to
the mandate of UNESCO – using education, natural
sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or
communication and information to build strong ties
among nations. The fellowship is intended for
American college/university students who express an
interest in international collaboration but as of
yet had not been afforded many opportunities to
travel abroad. The length of time for the travel is
expected to be between 4 and 6 weeks and should
include interaction with individuals from other
nations.

John t. Petters Foundation - This scholarship is
open to undergraduate college students in good
academic standing who meet the following criteria:
the Applicant must be pursuing a study abroad
program that has a focus on international business;
the Applicant should be undergoing the study abroad
application process which would be eligible for
credit by the student's home institution; the
Applicant must have financial need for scholarship
funding; and the Applicant must be a United States
citizen.

Institute for International Education Network:
IIE is working to increase the number and
diversity of American students who go abroad and to
encourage study in places of growing strategic
importance to the United States. To support this goal,
IIE launched this portal which offers you a single
point of entry to access valuable study abroad
information, including news coverage, academic
articles and research, fact sheets for your students,
and dates and deadlines for major scholarship and
fellowship programs.

Critical
Language Scholarships - The United States
Department of State and the Council of American
Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) are pleased to
announce the availability of overseas scholarships for
intensive summer language institutes in eleven
critical need foreign languages.Languages offered:
Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese,
Hindi,Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and
Urdu.

Maryland International Education Association (MIEA)
- provides students and advisors information covering
study abroad programs across the state of Maryland.
Also has provides information about the scholarship
that is offered and the ability for students to apply
online for the scholarship.

Rotary
International Ambassadorial Scholarships - The
Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program is
Ambassadorial Scholarships. Since 1947 nearly
37,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied
abroad under its auspices. Today it is the
world's largest privately funded international
scholarship program. Nearly 800 scholarships
were awarded for study in 2005-06. Through
grants totaling approximately US $500 million,
recipients from some 70 countries studied in more than
70 nations.

North American Language and Culture Assistants in
Spain -this grant is given to students to learn
Spanish language and culture and use their
experience to bridge gaps between the culture of
Spanish citizens and those of the United States and
Canada.

Teaching Assistant Program in France
The French Ministry of Education and the Cultural
Services Department of the
French Embassy in Washington, D.C. offer
approximately 1,500 teaching assistantships
each year for American
citizens and permanent residents of the United States
to teach English in French schools. Assistants
may work in primary schools
or secondary schools. Positions are located in
all regions of France and in the overseas
departments of French
Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion.

National Science Foundation - students can
search for recent and past funding as well as get
information on awards that are offered through the
Office of International Science and Engineering
(OISE).

Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
- grants are
intended to aid students gain knowledge through
study abroad. Grants are given every year in
$1000 increments. Students do not have to be
members of the honor society to apply.

Fulbright
Program - program funds students, faculty,
scholars, and professionals to advance their studies
sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and Bureau
of Education and Cultural Affairs. Fulbright
program is designed to increase understanding
between peoples of the United States and people of
other countries.

large collection of scholarships as well as a large
financial aid database that provides students with
links to other financial aid and scholarship websites.

FinAid - offers students options on getting
loans, scholarships, and military aid. Also offers
links to other sites where students can find financial
aid.

FastWeb: Scholarships, Financial Aid, and Colleges
- students can apply for scholarships, look for
colleges, including specific college scholarships and
internships for your major.

University of Minnesota - aids students in
finding scholarships, as well as the opportunity to
compare program costs. Non-University of Minnesota
students are able to search for scholarships and apply
for them and get estimates on comparing program costs,
but are not able to apply for financial aid.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators
- provides information to students as well as advisors
regarding scholarships and financial aid. This site
also has information that covers topics to inform
students and advisors about studying abroad.
