Dear parents,

So, if you are reading this message, somebody whom you love very dearly is either thinking about studying abroad or has decided already to do so.  Congratulations!  Your child is preparing to join an elite group of future leaders in our country. According to recent national data, only 1% of American college students study abroad.  By making this decision, your child is making an important statement about her commitment to prepare herself to be an engaged global citizen in an increasingly interdependent world.   She will be a more thoughtful citizen and more insightful human being as a result of her experience.  Of course, she will be distinguishing herself in a critical way from the competition in a hyper-competitive job market in the international economy.

Like no other academic experience in college, the study abroad experience holds the opportunity to transform hearts and minds.  The desire to study abroad is a desire to grow intellectually and personally, a desire to challenge stereotypes and pre-conceived notions, a desire to embrace the richness of the human experience.  Our Mission Statement at Salisbury University describes our highest purpose as “empower[ing] our students with the knowledge, skills, and core values that contribute to active citizenship, gainful employment, and life‑long learning in a democratic society and interdependent world.”  Study abroad is a powerful tool to accomplish this most noble of goals.  That is why Salisbury University is so committed to encouraging our students to study overseas.  The Center for International Education is here to help to make it happen.

Of course, you want to know what this all means for you and your child.  Where can my child go?  How does this fit in her major?   Is she going to be safe?  Will her credits transfer back?  How much will this cost me?  Is financial aid available?  What does she have to do?  What do I have to do? When do we have to do it?   Hopefully, you will find answers to many of your questions here on this website. If you have additional questions or concerns, please encourage your child to come visit us at the SU Center for International Education.  Of course, you can contact us directly yourself.  Our whole team here is eager to support students and their families in their efforts to participate in an international program.  Let us know how we can help.

Best regards,
