Scholarship Recipients

Bellavance Honors Scholarship

2015 Recipient

Suzanne Aldridge

Suzanne is a pre-social work major going into her freshman year at Salisbury.  She is from Washington, DC, and attended an arts high school where she focused on viola, which she plans to continue at college. Suzanne enjoys volunteering at her church, reading, and watching movies with friends.

2014 Recipient

Jennifer Luckin

Jennifer is a graduate of Hereford High School in Parkton, Maryland. Her personal experiences as well as her passion for helping others have inspired Jennifer to major in nursing. With a long term goal of attaining her masters and doctorate, Jennifer aspires to ultimately enter the educational field and aid in ending the current nursing shortage. Jennifer is appreciative and honored to be the freshman recipient of this year’s Bellavance Scholarship, and will diligently work to uphold the Bellavance Honors Program’s mission and values.

2013 Recipients

Darby Dicks

Darby is studying Communication Arts with a concentration in Journalism and Public Relations.  She is from Ellicott City in Howard County, Maryland and a contributor and photo editor for the award-winning honors newsletter, The Saunterer.  She also serves as an executive board member for the Honors Student Association.  Outside the Honors Program, she works as the photography editor for The Flyer, the university’s student-run newspaper.

Savana McClure

Savana is an accounting major from Damascus, Maryland who currently serves as the Resident Assistant for the Honors Living Learning Community in Manokin. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma (Freshman Honors Society). On campus, she is involved in many clubs, including the SU Poms Dance Team and Salisbury Dance Company. Being a part of the Honors program she has participated in many activities including the kick-off barbecues, which she believes are a great way to meet and mingle with other students in the program. After Salisbury, she would like to live and work in New York City.


Women's Circle Award

In partnership with The Women’s Circle of Salisbury University, the Thomas E. Bellavance Honors Program annually awards the “Educational Enhancement Award.”  This one-time award of $1,000 was established to enhance the educational experience of a deserving student who endeavors to experience an activity outside of the traditional classroom setting to further their education. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to community service and academic excellence. Award recipients are recognized each year at the Honors Spring Banquet and their names appear on a large plaque that is publicly displayed in the Honors Center.

2016 Recipient

Mary Kate Lamm

Mary Kate Lamm is a junior pre-nursing major from Ellicott City, Maryland. She spend three weeks in Cape Town in January 2016 working in health care settings including clinics and hospitals. She learned about treating such diseases as AIDS, fetal alcohol syndrome and tuberculosis in a culturally diverse environment. Mary Kate hopes to become a nurse practitioner. She is a member of the Student Nursing Association and Delta Gamma service fraternity, and also has worked as an Admissions host and supplemental instruction tutor.
Hayley Schindler

Hayley is a junior biology major for Bel Air, Maryland, who interned for 20 days in Maui, studying the effects of human marine activities, specifically underwater boat pollution, on the breeding activities of the Hawaiian humpback whale. The internship helped her gain hands-on experience working with both animals and scientists. Hayley is an aspiring veterinarian. She volunteers at the Wicomico County Humane Society and, last fall, interned at the Delmarva Discovery Center, assisting with animal care and wildlife education programs.

2014 Recipient

Chelsea Chmel

Chelsea is a senior exercise science major with an allied health track and dance minor. She has maintained a 4.0 as a Bellavance honors program student and member in SU Dance Company, SU Poms, Exercise Science Club, and Girls on Top of the World community service club. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Epsilon Kappa, and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies and works at the University Fitness Club as a Zumba instructor. Throughout her college career, she has presented at the SU Student Research Conference twice, and received a grant to present at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research in Wisconsin. She has also choreographed four original award-winning works on the SU Dance Company, and is SU’s 2014 National Outstanding Dance Minor. Presently, she is preparing for physical therapy school at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where she will begin her doctorate program in August 2015.


Director's Fellows

The Director’s Fellowships were established to recognize exceptional incoming freshman students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and the promise for leadership and success on the Salisbury University campus.  Fellowships range from $1,000 to $2,000 and are renewable a total of four years.  For consideration, applicants need to apply to the Thomas E. Bellavance Honors Program using the online application.  Students are selected based on their academic accomplishments, as well as an additional essay.  Recipients are decided by the Honors Admissions committee, comprised of the Director and Assistant Director of the Thomas E. Bellavance Honors Program and the Director of Admissions.  Director’s Fellows receive priority placement in one of the Honors Program’s freshman Living Learning Communities.  Students are required to maintain a 3.25 GPA and remain active in the Honors Program, demonstrating successful progress toward graduating with full university honors.  They are recognized each year at the Honors Spring Banquet and their names appear on a large plaque that is publicly displayed in the Honors Center.

2015 Recipients

Laura Burgess

Laura is a freshman from Burtonsville, Maryland.  She is a nursing major and plans to become a pediatric oncology nurse. She has wanted to go into healthcare for several years.  Her other interests include camping, soccer, and music.

Kacie Cassar

Kacie graduated from North Penn High School in Lansdale, Pennsylvania.  She has always loved school and learning, which has helped her choose History Education as her major.  Throughout her high school career, Kacie was active in student government, Key Club, and the National Honors Society.  She is looking forward to remaining active in Salisbury's student government and service-based clubs.  This past summer, she had the opportunity to travel to Germany with the International Friendship Club and she visited France a year ago.  Besides exploring other countries and cultures, Kacie also enjoys camping, kayaking, the beach, and making new friends.  Kacie is honored to be recognized as one of the inaugural Director's Fellows.

Rani Ewing

Rani Ewing plans to major in nursing, as she loves to help others.  She enjoys attending youth group and spending time with her friends. Rani is incredibly excited to see what the coming year and future hold for her.

Jade Gomez

Jade is a graduate from Parkland High School in her hometown of Allentown, Pennsylvania. She is very excited about starting her SU career as a psychology major and a Spanish minor. Outside of academics she enjoys playing the violin, participating in community service and plans on joining several clubs and activities on campus. Jade is grateful to be a recipient of a Director's Fellowship and to be a part of the Bellavance Honors Program. After Salisbury she plans on using what she's learned to continue her education in the psychology field.

Fiona Mary Halloran

Fiona is a passionate student from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. She plans to study Biology and Mathematics at Salisbury University with a goal of going to medical school and becoming a surgeon. Running is also an important part of Fiona's everyday life. She ran all throughout high school and plans to run for Salisbury's cross-country and track teams.

Marie Hils

Marie is an early childhood and elementary education double major from Raleigh, North Carolina. Additionally, she will study psychology and Spanish Language. Her passions include dance, which she will pursue with the SU Dance Company, and helping others: she is excited to partake in any volunteering opportunity she can get her hands on. Marie is grateful for her recognition as a Directors Fellow, and she looks forward to furthering her education with the Bellavance Honors Program.

Hunter Jennings

Hunter is a Chemistry Major following a pre-med track with hopes to enter Medical School. He hails from Annapolis, MD where he has two triplet brothers and an older brother, all college students. He participated in the Algonquin canoe trip to Canada through Salisbury University and hopes to return as a peer leader in the subsequent years. He plans on starting a club on campus based in the art of lightshows. Outside of the classroom he enjoys participating in the frequent events held around campus and connecting with new people. He hopes to join the Army’s medical corps after medical school and travel the world helping those in need with more than just medical care.

Carly Leventoff

Carly is a graduate of Fallsburg Jr./Sr. High School, in Fallsburg NY.  During her time at Fallsburg she was captain of both the volleyball and ski team, vice president of the Key Club, and Treasurer of her class.  During her senior year, she took part in a medical program where she had the opportunity to shadow doctors in different fields, where she confirmed her goals of becoming a dermatologist.  She is entering the freshman class majoring in Biology, on a pre-med track.

Christopher Mackowiak

Chris is a graduate of North Penn High School in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. He plans to pursue a degree in Communication Arts while specializing in Media Production with a minor in Earth Science. Chris is an avid sports fan and particularly enjoys soccer, college football, college basketball, and baseball. During his high school years, Chris had the opportunity to participate in the North Penn Television program by producing a weekly school-wide news program and working as the producer for sports broadcasting. Chris is a two-time Emmy award nominee and a graduate of KYW Newstudies program.  He looks forward to become involved with SUTV and other organizations during his time at Salisbury University.

Julia Marie Miller

Julia Miller is a freshman at Salisbury University working towards her Bachelor’s degree in chemistry on the accelerated Doctor of Pharmacy track. Following Salisbury, she plans on attending graduate school in order to pursue a career as a clinical pharmacist. Along with a passion for science, she has a love for acting. In high school, she was on stage performing in plays and musicals while also being an anchor on the school's news program. She is excited to get involved on campus in the upcoming years, and is honored to be one of this years Directors Fellows.

Rachel Welsh

Rachel graduated from Liberty High School in Eldersburg, Maryland.  She graduated with over 500 service hours and is excited to get involved with the Salisbury community. Rachel is also looking forward to joining a variety of clubs and finding a club tennis league with which to play. She plans on majoring in Earth Science and is hoping to study abroad.  After graduating she wants to pursue the field further with a focus on volcanoes.
