Recent Honors-Sponsored Activities

The Honors College sponsors various trips throughout the year at little to no cost to our students. Follow us on Facebook to keep up with our students' travels and achievements. Here are a few of our recent trips:

Northeast Regional Honors Conference, April 2016

Students attended the Northeast Regional Honors Conference held this year in Boston, MA. They presented research ranging from histories of seventeenth-century colonial Virginia to kangaroos in Australia. Next year, students will attend the conference held in Pittsburgh.

New York City, November 2015

At the end of the fall 2015 semester, the Honors College organized a trip to New York City, where students visited museums and attended a performance of the Radio City Music Hall's Christmas Spectacular. A few students even got the chance to go backstage and meet a few of the Rockettes and check out the camels from the show.

Smithsonian National Zoo and DC United Soccer Match, October 2015

The Dean of the Honors College and Faculty Director of the Thomas E. Bellavance Honors Program traveled with a group of Honors students to visit the National Zoo in Washington DC and watch a DC United game.

National Museum of the American Indian, October 2015

Students in Dr. Kalb and Dr. Buss's "Contemporary Native American Literature and Art" class visit the National Museum of the American Indian for a specialized tour of the collection by Smithsonian research specialist Rebecca Trautmann.

New York City, April 2015

During our annual spring trip to New York City, our students visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the Hester Street Fair, the Tenement Museum, Little Italy, Chinatown, and got a tour backstage of Disney Broadway. Other students went to see Broadway shows and to check out the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Northeast Regional Honors Conference, April 2015

Honors students traveled with the Dean of the Honors College and Faculty Director of the Honors Program to Gettysburg for the Northeast Regional Honors Conference. The students presented their research on a wide range of topics and toured historic Gettysburg.

Denver, CO, November 2014

The Dean of the Honors College, Faculty Director of the Honors Program, and student workers attended the National Collegiate Honors Conference in Denver, CO. Here they participated in information sessions about how to incorporate successful examples of Honors activities from around the nation.

Washington, D.C., September 2014
As part of a food-themed Critical Thinking and Writing course, students from three LLCs visited the National Museum of American History's "Food: Transforming the American Table, 1950-2000" exhibit and participated in a walking food tour of the U-Street neighborhood, famed for its soul food and Ethiopian cuisine.


Assateague Island, MD August 2014
The Honors College starts off every year with an orientation for the LLCs at Assateague Island National Seashore.
