COACHES
CORNER (for Eastern Shore MSO Coaches) Updated
05/07/13 - Congratulations, Eastern Shore teams, on your
performances at the MSO State Tournament!
TO SERVE AS
AN EVENT JUDGE
TO VOLUNTEER
The Maryland Science Olympiad
(MSO) promotes STEM education
through annual regional and state tournament competitions
held to educate, recognize, and award outstanding student
achievement in the sciences.
The Eastern Shore Regional
Tournament of the MSO is
scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Salisbury
University. The regional tournament will consist of several
team events in a variety of areas including Biology,
Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Technology. The
competition events not only emphasize knowledge of science
concepts, but also process skills, mathematics, and
teamwork. School teams of no more than 15 students from middle
(Division B) and high schools (Division C) compete in
several events (typically 2-3 students per event team).
Regional finalist teams will advance to the state tournament at
Johns Hopkins University (April 20, 2013); Divisions B and C compete in their own tournaments.
The commitment of all parties,
especially of the students and their coaches, is critical to
the success of the MSO team. Adequate time must be committed for
students to be able to prepare for the events they will be
competing in on tournament day. Interested students or
potential coaches should carefully consider whether their
schedule can accommodate the time required for team practice
and competition.
The website for the Maryland
Science Olympiad (www.marylandscienceolympiad.org)
is a good starting point for parents and coaches who are
interested in having a MSO team(s) at their school. Salisbury University
will support teams on the
Eastern Shore by providing a coaching stipend of $500 per
school. We would like to have as many
teams as possible attend this year and welcome teams from
all middle and high schools on Maryland's Eastern Shore,
including private schools.
To register a team, please enter
all of the required information at
www.marylandscienceolympiad.org. The
cost to register teams is $200 for the first team and $100
for each additional team from that school and covers regional
and state/national tournaments (if team(s) advance to that
level). Upon registration, official rules will be mailed
from the MSO state office to each coach.
If you have questions about MSO, the registration
process, or other aspects of this program, please contact Ms. Kristen
Paul,
Salisbury University STEM Coordinator and MSO Eastern Shore
Site Coordinator, at
