Way2GoMaryland Event and Essay Contest

Way2GoMaryland is the University System of Maryland’s campaign to encourage more students and their families to begin preparing for college early.


WHO
: Students in grades 5-10 who live on Maryland’s Eastern Shore

WHAT: A University System of Maryland (USM) Way2GoMaryland event for you AND your parents/guardians

  • Hear USM students talk about their paths to college.

  • Get tips on preparing and paying for college from USM and College Savings Plans of Maryland experts.

  • Receive a Way2GoMaryland gift pack and win door prizes.

  • Enjoy refreshments.

  • Free Parking

  • Learn who won the essay contest (details may be found at ; first prize for each level is a Kindle.

WHEN: Saturday, May 4, 2013. Check-in begins at 9 am, formal program begins at 10 am; college fair and special sessions on paying for college, high school coursework and choosing academic majors and careers run from 10:30 am to 12:45; refreshments available until 1pm.

Essay Contest for Students Grades 5-10 on the Eastern Shore

Students in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grades who live and attend school (or are home-schooled) on Maryland’s Eastern Shore are invited to enter an essay contest for the chance of winning a Kindle and other prizes. Prizes will be awarded at the University System of Maryland’s Way2GoMaryland event at Salisbury University on Saturday, May 4th.

  • NOTE: Winners must be present to receive prizes, which will be announced during the last half-hour of the event

The rules are simple: Write a 200-250 word essay about why it is important to start preparing for college BEFORE you are a high-school student.

  • Essays must be typed in 12 point, Times/Times New Roman font, double-spaced

  • Essays may be submitted via e-mail (way2gomaryland@usmd.edu) with "Essay Contest" in the subject line OR mailed to: University System of Maryland, Way2GoMaryland Essay Contest, 3300 Metzerott Road, Adelphi, MD 20783

  • Entries must include your name, your grade, the name of the city and county in which you live, and the name and location of the school you attend

 Essays will be judged by University System of Maryland officials who will select the winning essays for middle school level (5th, 6th, 7th) and high school level (8th, 9th, 10th) on the basis of organization, correct grammar usage, and clear expression of ideas. The officials will select a first-prize winner, a second-prize winner, and a third-prize winner for each level, awarding a total of six prizes. Each first-prize winner will receive a Kindle; students placing second and third will receive other great prizes.

To be eligible for consideration, entries must be received by Friday, April 26, 2013. If winners are not present at the May 4 event when prizes are announced, the University System of Maryland reserves the right to award the prizes to others. The winning essays and photos of the winners will be posted on the Way2GoMaryland website: way2gomaryland.org.
