Dr. Lisa D. Leslie, Academic Advising Coordinator

Lisa Leslie’s varied background makes her perfectly suited to being the new Advising Services Coordinator at the Henson School of Science and Technology. Her eight year undergraduate career took her to nine institutions across Texas and Maryland, with majors such as Accounting, Computer Science, Business, and Engineering, before finally settling in with her “one true love,” English. After giving in to that love, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a Master’s Degree from Appalachian State in North Carolina, and a Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool. So she knows the pains and pleasures of not knowing what to study and exploring different subjects to find a major. She also knows that school is not “all work and no play;” besides teaching literature in England and Greece, she walked over 200 miles across Northern England and enjoyed it so much she did the same thing across Southern Scotland two years later.

Lisa comes to Salisbury University from Virginia Tech, where as an instructor in the English department she gained extensive experience explaining the value of a liberal arts education to students whose strengths are in math and science. After 7 years of teaching composition and literature, she was recruited to serve in the Office of Recovery and Support after the April 16, 2007 shootings. For 18 months she was the office’s project manager, participating in campus safety and security investigations, campus and community mental health services assessments, and federal grant work, assisting the injured students as they came back to school and finished their degrees, and contributing to the support of the families who lost loved ones on that terrible day.

Now completing a Masters Certificate in Academic Advising in Higher Education from Kansas State University, she brings to the Henson advising position a wide range of university experience in both student and academic affairs, and a determination to make sure students get the best information available. Knowing that sometimes that information is not what students want to hear, she strives to be empathetic and straightforward while listening carefully to what students say and asking good questions to help them discover their own best path.
