Salisbury University (SU) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Horticulturalist (Greenhouse Operations/Zone3).
Primary Job Duties: Provide expertise and leadership in the area of plant propagation and greenhouse operations for the support and continuing development of a well-maintained and diversified plant selection and University arboretum. Duties to include managing the greenhouse operations, campus recycling program, and Zone 3 of the campus grounds.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Horticulture, Floriculture, Biology, Botany, or a related field with three to five years of relevant greenhouse experience. A Maryland Pesticide Applicators License and experience with a recycling program is preferred.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Provide expertise, in the area of plant propagation in an effort to minimize SUs dependence on outside vendors for plant production. Demonstrated experience in growing plants in a greenhouse environment. To guide and motivate students, faculty and staff to continue to increase our recycling program and volume of collected recyclable material. Advises, trains and monitors the student employees and groundskeeper in proper horticultural techniques. Establishes schedules and priority list for students and service workers to ensure all areas of campus are policed for recyclable material. Organizes growing schedule of all seasonal plantings on campus and produces crops for high visibility areas of campus. Routine contact with individuals from other SU departments, outside organizations, which require accurate and broad interpretation of departmental and institutional policies; explaining situations and issues and advising people of alternative or applicable course of action. Demonstrated ability to supervise groundskeepers/full-time personnel and students.
