Applying for Admission
To be considered for admission, students must have completed
a bachelor's degree in English (or a related field) with a
minimum 3.0 GPA in those undergraduate (and, if applicable,
graduate) courses. A student who fails to meet this requirement
should consult with the English Department's Graduate Program
Director regarding the removal of deficiencies.
Candidates who wish to apply for admission into the M.A. in
English program need to apply to the
Graduate Program at Salisbury University as well as to the
English Department. Candidates should submit a complete a
Salisbury University Application for Graduate Program Admission
and have all of their undergraduate and graduate institutions
forward their transcripts to the Office of Admissions, 1200
Camden Avenue, Salisbury University, Salisbury MD 21801.
Applying for:
M.A. in English
In addition to the
Application for Graduate Program Admission and all college
transcripts (indicating a minimum 3.0 GPA for English (or related) coursework)
which must be received by SU's Office of Admissions, the applicant for the M.A.
in English must also submit (or have forwarded) directly to the English
Department's Graduate Program Director, Salisbury University, Salisbury MD 21801
the following materials:

A Department of English M.A.
in English Application Form (click here for
PDF format or
Word
format). No electronic applications will be accepted.

A written statement of
purpose for applying to the English M.A. program and specific option.
-
Two (2) letters of
recommendation using the
Department Form.

Qualifying exam scores:
-
For the
Literature Options or the Composition, Language and Rhetoric Option, acceptable
scores on the GRE General Test (or MAT scores if not applying for a
teaching assistantship). Copy of GRE Registration Form (if scores are not
available at the time of application). Or,
-
For the
TESOL Options, the MAT or PRAXIS I scores are acceptable in lieu of the GRE, but
only for students who are not applying for a teaching assistantship.
(Note: All TESOL students who are also seeking Maryland Certification will be required to take the PRAXIS
I Series before the
end of their first year of study.)
NOTE: Qualifying examination scores are considered
relative to undergraduate (and previous graduate) GPAs, recommendations,
statements of purpose, and interviews (if required). There are no set cutoff or
minimum scores for "acceptable."
Deadlines:
Applications to the M.A. in English program are only
considered for Fall or Spring admission.
All application materials must be
received by the English Department's Graduate Program Director
no later than August 1st (for Fall semester
admission) or January 1st (for Spring semester admission.
Applications for
Teaching
Assistantships
(which begin in Fall only) must be complete and received by
March 15. When admitted, graduate students may count
no more than nine hours taken as non-degree students toward the
M.A. in English. With the approval of the Graduate Program
Director, up to nine hours of graduate credit may be transferred
from another institution.
Applying for:
Post-Baccalaureate
(non-Degree) Certificate in TESOL
In addition to the
Application for Graduate Program Admission
and all college transcripts which must be received by SU's
Office of Admissions, the applicant for the Post-Baccalaureate
Certificate in TESOL must also submit (or have forwarded)
directly to the English Department's Graduate Program Director,
Salisbury University, Salisbury MD 21801 the following
materials:

A letter of application for
admission which includes a written description of reasons for pursuing the
Certificate and a statement of career goals within TESOL and
-
Two letters of
recommendation.
