ShoreCorps/PALS Service Sites 2009-2010

Listed below are AmeriCorps member responsibilities at each of our prospective service sites for the upcoming year.  Please refer to the organizational website for more information about the agency or specific agency programs.

Somerset County

College Career Access Program (CCAP) - Crisfield High School - Crisfield, Maryland
~assist all students at the site but give priority to first generation, low income Gear Up students who seek access to post-secondary educational opportunities.  The member will provide services such as information on college readiness, testing, career selection, college applications, scholarship opportunities, FAFSA and other financial aid applications to students and students' families who express an interest or need at Crisfield High School.  This member will serve closely with the full-time member who splits his/her time between WHS and CHS (see below).

Wicomico County

Center 4 Clean Start - Salisbury, Maryland 
~care for and interact with infants and toddlers while the children's mothers are in addictions counseling. The member will provide general care and supervision along with foster grandparents (program is part of the Worcester Health Department).

Delmar Elementary School - Delmar, Maryland
~assist with small group instruction in the classroom.  They may also be responsible for working one-on-one, assisting with playground duty, and the STARS afterschool program.

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County - Salisbury, Maryland
~The primary service provided by Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County is to build simple, decent, affordable homes to provide low-income, working families an opportunity to purchase and own their own home. In order help raise the funds necessary to do, Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County operates a Restore home improvement outlet. Donated home improvement items, furniture and appliances are sold at the Restore to generate income for the home building program. Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County has also begun implementation of A Brush With Kindness program, which assists low-income homeowners with maintenance of the exterior of their homes.

Involved Parents Productive Students Mentoring Program - Salisbury, Maryland
The IPPS program special emphasis on creating activities for disadvantaged youth after school, over the summer months, and during times when the public school system is dormant. The major training channels are goal setting, behavior improvement, entrepreneurship, computer literacy, anger management, and building self-esteem.  Our program uses the “Talks Mentoring Curriculum” based on the books Talks My Father Never Had With Me: Helping the Young Males Make it to Adulthood, by Dr. Harold Davis, and Talks My Mother Never had with Me: by Dr. Ollie Watts Davis.

Junior Achievement - Salisbury, Maryland
Junior Achievement of Salisbury Maryland, a not-for profit organization with the assistance of over 200 volunteers, works with 5,000 kids, kindergarten through grade 12. Its programs prepare youth to become valuable members of the workforce by learning the role of business in society and the role of financial literacy in life.  Youth will run your community in the future?  Teach, Learn, Support and Be a part of the solution.

Kids of Honor, Inc. - Salisbury, Maryland
~Kids of Honor, a youth-based non-profit that empowers youth to graduate from high school.  The member will facilitate the high school program (Y.E.A.H.) and assist fifteen partner programs in Wicomico County.  Member needs to be available during after-school hours- 3:00 to 6:30 p.m.- in addition to other hours during the week.

Salisbury Promise- Salisbury, Maryland
Salisbury’s Promise is a branch of America’s Promise. This program embodies Five Promises which will help youth become productive citizens: Caring Adults, Healthy Start and Future, Safe Places, Marketable Skills and Opportunities to Serve. This experience provides over 100 local students with Marketable Skills through effective education about career acquisition tools and opportunities. 

Salisbury Urban Ministries - Salisbury, Maryland
Our goal is to increase academic success which leads to high school completion, promote college education, increase self confidence and self esteem, to help youth become culturally aware and proud of who they are. To provide youth with a caring adult, a safe place, a positive learning environment and a nutritious meal.

Salisbury Zoological Park - Salisbury, Maryland
~conduct on-site and off-site Zoo education programs designed to foster an understanding of and appreciation for diversity and to encourage environmental stewardship and community-based action designed to improve the world in which we live.  The member will also assist with the care and handling of the education animal collection, volunteer recruitment and training, office tasks and cleaning necessary for educational programming.

Telamon Corporation - Salisbury, Maryland
Chartered as a nonprofit organization, our purpose is to improve the lives of those in need.  The program works with a variety of diverse programs for farm workers, children from low-income families and other groups with special needs. Provide literacy and early childhood education, job training, emergency services, temporary or permanent housing opportunities, and a number of others.  Funding for these efforts comes from federal and state agencies, foundations and tax-deductible, private donations.

Ward Museum- Salisbury, Maryland
The Ward Museum is a crucial interdisciplinary learning resource for the Delmarva Peninsula. The museum’s Education Department serves over 19,000 youth and adult students every year through a variety of dynamic, hands-on programs, tours, and summer camps that focus on exploring birds in nature, discovering birds in culture, and creating birds in art. The museum offers programming to schools, home school, scouts and other organized groups. www.wardmuseum.org

Wicomico County Health Department - Salisbury, Maryland
~assist in organization, planning, implementation and evaluation of the GEMS program, Teen Pregnancy Prevention program for middle school females and other Adolescent Health programs.  The member will also update attendance records, shop, file, attend health fairs, assist in health presentation, mentor students, communicate with parents and meet with school officials.

Wicomico Mentoring Project - Salisbury, Maryland
~assist the mentoring coordinator at Salisbury Middle School with all duties of the Wicomico Mentoring Project.  The member will interact with students, school staff and volunteers.

Wicomico Partnership for Families & Children - Salisbury, Maryland
~perform community and media outreach.  Duties to include creating flyers, brochures, article writing, and overall event management.  Member will also gain professional contacts and community exposure by talking with community members about current initiatives, attending collaborative meetings, working with corporate partners, and organizing promotions for the local media about community programs.

Worcester County

Worcester County Health Dept. - Prevention Office - Snow Hill & Berlin, Maryland
~assist prevention specialists with the provision of prevention services specifically directed towards youth.  Serve with specialist to assist youth in several gender specific groups and after-school programs with a focus on prevention of risk-behaviors (i.e., tobacco use, alcohol or other drugs, etc.).  Also participate in outreach activities to disseminate information concerning these risk behaviors.

Worcester County Health Dept.  - Helping Adolescents Recovery Today (H.A.R.T.) - Snow Hill, Berlin, Ocean City, Maryland
~assist with individual case management and group activities with teens who struggle with chemical dependencies.
