What is AmeriCorps?

Bill Clinton signed the national and Community Serivce Trust Act of 1993 to expand opportunites for Americans to serve their communities.  Thus AmeriCorps was born.  The AmeriCorps, a program of the CNCS, is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive serivce to meet our country's critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.  

What is ShoreCorps /PALS?

ShoreCorps/PALS (Partnership for Adolescents on the Lower Shore) is the AmeriCorps program at Salisbury University.  ShoreCorps/PALS is a partnership with community-based organizations serving at-risk youth in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester counties.  At the ShoreCorps/PALS sites, even though each has its own purpose and structure, they are all united for a common purpose- engaging citizens dedicated to making their communities better.  To see all of the current site locations, click here.

ShoreCorps/PALS mission is to serve at-risk youth and adolescents in the classroom, after-school programs, in-school programs and in public and private non-profit agencies.

On the Eastern Shore of Maryland, ShoreCorps/PALS members serve in positions providing:

  • homework assistance
  • mentoring services
  • parent and family support services
  • community outreach activities
  • fun & educational activities
  • volunteer recruitment & management to help support community activities
